The Next Schools Program…”Getting There”
The transition from one phase of an academic career to the next, be it from 8th grade into high school or from high school into college, can be an overwhelming and trying time for both students and their families. Not only is the transition itself a daunting journey on which to embark, but the preparation for that transition is also a time fraught with anxiety, pressure, and uncertainty. Managing the preparation and time management involved in balancing standardized testing preparation, application completion, and a challenging academic and extracurricular load is no easy task - for both the student and their family.

The Next Schools Program offers families a respite and a guide to help navigate them through this special time. The Whole Student is an experienced and objective third party that helps families in the following ways:

• Remove and relieve the tension that can arise when parents’ and students’ expectations and anxieties clash.

• Assist in setting goals and creating a plan for how to reach them that meet both students’, parents’, and schools’ needs.

• Develop, tailor, and assist in carrying out an individualized schedule and timeline that helps the students accomplish their various tasks in a realistic and manageable manner.

• Practice for interviewing process through coaching and roleplaying.

• Complete applications in a thorough, efficient, and timely manner that produces authentic, personalized, and high-quality responses and essays.

The New Schools Progam…”Once you’re there”
Whether a student is at a new school because they are just starting middle or high school or because they have transferred to a new school, the transition is a challenging one. Learning to balance the new demands, expectations, and challenges – academic, social, extracurricular - that a new school brings can be a difficult adjustment for a student and family to make.

The New Schools Program provides support and guidance through this process to help make the transition to a new school as seamless and successful as possible. The Whole Student supports students and their families in a variety of ways:

• Assisting students in reaching and meeting increased and higher expectations for their writing.

• Developing more effective and sophisticated note-taking and study skills to better handle more challenging material/subject matter.

• Aiding in the adjusting to and handling of increased homework loads.

• Designing organizational systems that suit new schedules and work loads.

• Increasing comfort levels around self-advocacy with teachers and administrators in a new school environment.
