Philosophy

At the core of the Whole Student philosophy is the belief that in order to create a successful learning environment, a student must experience the following four elements: discovery, meaning, safety, and being known.  I am compelled by the capacity for creativity, incredible talent, dynamic intelligence, and unfettered zeal for learning that young people possess.  Picasso said that all people are born artists. Sir Ken Robinson contended that the challenge then is to remain an artist as we grow into adulthood.  What brought me to and keeps me in education is the challenge and honor of nurturing, inspiring, and sustaining the artistry that each young person brings with them into the world.

I achieve results with students.  To do this I inspire and guide rather than deliver and dictate.  I get students to think deeply about subject matter, to enjoy the exploration and discovery essential to learning, and to leave our time together with a genuine feeling of mastery, understanding, and confidence.

The Whole Student offers students grades 4 through 12 individualized one-on-one support in a unique, private setting.  With over ten years of experience as an educator, I guide students through the process of understanding themselves as learners and reaching their academic and personal potential.  The road to academic success, fraught with choices, schools, varying opinions, and anxiety, can be a difficult one for parents and students to navigate.  I am here to help make the journey as easy and well informed as possible.

As an experienced teacher, advisor, organizational coach, and academic tutor, I draw on a wealth of experience and resources in providing support for each student. As a result of their time working with The Whole Student, students can expect increased academic success, confidence, and knowledge of themselves as learners.  The skills, tools, and confidence gained at The Whole Student will bring both immediate and lifelong results.
